Napier's architecture is quite unique, with Maori motifs built in them. One of New Zealand's most photographed cities, Napier is made prettier by the palms and the Norfolk Island pines. Surrounded by beautiful hills and the pristine waters of the South Pacific, Napier is the focal point of the Hawke's Bay region.
During the rebuilding process, Louis Hay, a prominent New Zealand architect and resident of Napier got his chance to shine. A fan of Art Nouveau, Arts and Craft movement and Frank Lloyd Wright, he built a number of buildings in and around Napier. He helped the Napier rebuilding committee hire a number of local architects to help rebuild the city. The National Tobacco Company building in Napier is the work for which he is most renowned.
